Discovering Harmony: My Journey with Mental Health Challenges and Diabetes

Inspired by my journey with music and the brilliant people I have met along the way, I have started to rebuild my resilience in navigating life’s challenges. My passion for music, commitment to self-care, and finding inspiration in difficult times have driven this. Living with mental health challenges and diabetes while pursuing your dreams, working full time and trying to rebuild your life, mind, body and soul after a significant relationship ending, not to mention people who you thought were friends turning their back on you, can be pretty daunting.

Living with these conditions presents its own set of challenges, but I refuse to let them define me. Instead, I tackle each day with determination and a positive mindset, prioritising consistent exercise, meditation, a balanced diet, and medication to maintain my health. Through these efforts, I’ve discovered that taking care of my body improves my physical well-being and fuels my creativity and performance on stage.

Recently, I had the privilege of performing alongside my good friend Leon, in the form of the Rattlin’ Bones duo, at the grand opening of Villainy Beauty shop. The experience was electrifying, reigniting my passion and reminding me of the transformative power of music. It was a moment of pure joy, where the music transcended any challenges I faced, reaffirming my belief in the healing power of song.

In addition to live performances, I’ve found solace and inspiration in exploring covers and diving deep into the works of my favourite songwriters. From the timeless tunes of Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Hank Williams to the soul-stirring melodies of Nick Cave and the raw authenticity of Johnny Cash, I’m drawn to these artists’ rich storytelling and emotional depth. Through reinterpretation and reflection, I uncover new layers of meaning within their songs, infusing my style and perspective into each rendition.

Amidst my exploration of covers and classic tunes, I’m also working on several new songs for another country album and a Rattlin’ Bones EP. Each song reflects my resilience and creativity, offering a glimpse into my journey and the experiences shaping my music. Through my lyrics and melodies, I want to connect with others facing similar challenges, offering them hope and inspiration through the power of music. I am also working on a songwriting book that will help encourage people to get started in exploring their own creativity.

As I navigate life’s ups and downs, I remain steadfast in my commitment to music and health. With each chord strummed and each lyric sung, I find healing and strength, embracing the beauty of imperfection and the power of self-expression. Through my journey, I’m reminded that even in the face of adversity, music has the power to uplift, inspire, and unite us in harmony.
